In 2002, Attilio Caroli Caputo had the ambitious idea to create a young football tournament combined with the Carnival, along the same lines as Viareggio tournament, but directed to Beginners Cathegory. He accepted the challenge to take the most important football teams in Salento. A challenge that increased year by year, edition by edition, turning Carnival Tournament of Gallipoli into an important national and international event that involves Salento as a whole.

Eight teams took part in the first edition of "Carnival Cup City of Gallipoli", taking place from the 9th until the 11th of February 2002: Juventus, Salignano, Lecce, Formello (Paola), Bari, Pescina, Miggiano and Lazio.

On the 10th of February, in the first knock-out day, Juve prevailed over Salignano (3-1), Lecce dominated Formello (Paola) (7-1), Bari beat Pescina (3-1) and Lazio defeated Miggiano by a majority of one goal (1-0). Semi-final matches took place on the 11th of February in the morning at "Bianco" stadium of Gallipoli: Lecce accessed to final match beating Juve (2-0) and Bari made the same thing and scored three goals against Lazio. In the afternoon the final matches took place: Juve beat Lazio (1-0) and reached the third place, while in the match for the first place between Bari and Lecce, the first team prevailed over Lecce (1-0).

The first edition came to an end, but something was up for the second edition. Next week we will talk about it.
